An insider’s guide into getting the best tattoo in Ao Nang, Krabi

At Krabi Sunset Cruises, our connection to Ao Nang runs deep—so deep, in fact, that lots of member of our team carry a piece of Krabi with them on their skin! Just look at our own boat tour tattoo that Owner’s Carolyn and Michael had done by an artist on Railay (below.)

Whether you’re a seasoned tattoo enthusiast or considering your first one, getting inked in Thailand is an experience that’ll last a lifetime (quite literally). But where do you start? With so many of Krabi’s visitors joining us on the boat tour, it goes without saying that we get asked about our tatts (and where to get one in Thailand) A LOT!

In this blog, we’ll share our insights, thoughts and recommendations for what (we believe) are the best local Krabi tattoo artists – while answering common frequently asked questions about tattoos in Thailand.

What is a bamboo tattoo?

Bamboo tattoos are a traditional form of tattooing that uses a long, thin bamboo rod. In days gone by, these tattoos were often imbued with spiritual meanings and believed to bring good fortune or protection – known as “Sak Yant” in Thai.

While the idea of being tattooed with a bamboo stick, rather than a set of needles, is often a new concept to Krabi travellers, this method ensures your skin is punctured (not torn). As a result, a bamboo tattoo is a good choice for those getting their first tattoo, or people worried about the pain – as it results in a significant reduction in aching and bleeding. Machine tattoos often scab after application, while the bamboo method does not, meaning healing time is usually faster too!

However, you should still be asking the same kind of health and safety questions as you would at home or with a machine tattoo. It’s not uncommon for us to meet travellers who have picked up ‘drunken’ tattoos at the end of a boozy night in their previous location. We strongly recommend saving your tattoo experience until you’re sober and take note of all the after-care instructions provided by your artist.

Is it safe to get a tattoo in Ao Nang?

Absolutely – like, anywhere, if you choose the right studio! The key is to look for experienced artists and clean, well-maintained facilities. Many local shops in Ao Nang cater to international clients, so hygiene and safety protocols are top-notch. As noted above, your artists should be able to answer questions and recommend how to treat your tattoo in the days following its application. If they’re not, seek out a different studio.

How much does a tattoo cost in Thailand?

Tattoo prices in Ao Nang can vary depending on the size, design, and technique (machine or bamboo). For small designs, you might pay around 2,000–3,000 THB, while larger custom pieces can range between 10,000–20,000 THB. Make sure you discuss your budget and design beforehand to avoid surprises – another reason to make sure you avoid heading for one post-party nights out!

Our favourite tattoo artists in Ao Nang

Here are some top-notch studios we trust:

  • Elles Bamboo Tattoo: Elle has been designing and tattooing the Krabi community for almost a decade now, and we’ve watched his studio grow through his entire journey. Elle is who our team go to when they want a new tattoo, and he is the artists behind all of our Krabi Sunset Cruise ink! You’ll find his studio at the back of Tamarind Bar on the walking street of Railay.
  • Chang Tattoo Krabi: If you can’t make it across to Railay and want to pick up a tattoo in Ao Nang, we recommend Chang Tattoo. Another favourite among locals and expats for their modern techniques and creative styles, you can opt for machine or handpoke method here.
  • Sak Yant Tattoo in Krabi: Railay used to be home to a specialist tattoo artist who designed and offered Sak Yant tattoos, with the full traditional ceremony – however, he has now left the area. As far as we know, there are no ‘qualified’ Sak Yant artists in the Ao Nang area. Many of the tattoo shops, like Elle, are able to reproduce the stylings of these tattoos, but Elle notes that they will not carry the same spiritual meaning as those carried out by an ajarn master.

What should you know about tattoo aftercare in Thailand?

Thailand’s tropical climate means you’ll need to be extra cautious during the healing process. Protect your tattoo from the sun and avoid swimming for at least two weeks. Local artists will provide specific aftercare instructions, so follow them carefully to keep your tattoo looking vibrant.
