Originally a trading vessel over 100 years ago, she journeyed across Southeast Asia, transporting goods. “Pla Luang” means “the honorable fish,” a name that reflects the respect and reverence held for her in Thailand.
These days, Pla Luang has traded in her busy trade routes for the glittering waters of Railay and the surrounding areas, where she’s been living gracefully for about 20 years. Recently, we’ve given her a bit of TLC, restoring her to offer you a truly unique experience. Her traditional design features a horseshoe-shaped stern and a high deck, giving her that classic, timeless charm. With a flat bottom and no keel, she relies on a big rudder or leeboard to glide smoothly over the waves.
The Junk boat is an ancient Chinese sailing vessel/ship design still in use today. Junks may have developed from the very early bamboo rafts, which had a high stern. Cro-magnon cave paintings on the Indo-China coast show junk-shaped double-hull vessels.
Junks were developed during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220AD) and were used as seagoing vessels as early as the 2nd century AD. They evolved in the later dynasties and were used throughout Asia for extensive ocean voyages. They were found, and in lesser numbers are still found, throughout Southeast Asia and India, but primarily in China, perhaps most famously in Hong Kong. Found more broadly today is a growing number of modern recreational junk-rigged sailboats.
Classic junks were built of softwoods (although of teak in Guangdong) with the outside shape built first. Then multiple internal compartments/bulkheads accessed by separate hatches and ladders, reminiscent of the interior structure of bamboo were built in.
But what really makes Pla Luang special is the way she combines history with comfort. Imagine lounging on plush cushions spread across the spacious deck, with plenty of room to stretch out and relax. The music onboard sets the perfect mood, whether you’re enjoying a slow-paced sail or soaking in the Krabi sunset. Our vibrant red sails catch the eye and add a touch of flair to the journey.
For those who love a good view, the rooftop deck is a prime spot. It’s perfect for sunbathing during the day or stargazing across the Krabi skies at night. With plenty of seating and shady spots, everyone can find their own perfect nook. Whether you’re here for a laid-back cruise or to celebrate a special occasion, Pla Luang offers a blend of elegance and relaxation that makes every moment memorable.
